My team was approached by Made For Love with a request to build their new dating app. In response, we produced exploratory research and conducted interviews with target users to recognize pain points and insights from Black female users seeking better representation on dating platforms. This lead us to creating a dating experience that helps Black women to build meaningful relationships on their own terms.

My Responsibilities

The Problem

In recent years, online dating has become a more viable option for people to meet. Despite this, Black women feel they have a more challenging time being represented on popular dating platforms. Creating a community that amplifies Black women’s voice and character can help them take back control to connect with partners and build meaningful relationships.

The Results

Given the ambiguous problem space, we decided to first dive into the user research. Many of users stated that it’s hard to filter dating profiles out because, like one women said, “dating platforms are basically judging a book by it's cover.” Overall, our users wanted a platform with a slower pace but still had a familiarity of matching from the other dating platforms.

This heavily informed our design decisions, inspiring a deliberately step-by-step onboarding process that wasn’t too long or too short while ensuring our product is genuinely trying to understand who the user is. Keeping in mind that the users were desiring a slower paced dating style, we decided that we didn’t want to limit our users to only specific matches. We created the option to explore potential partners with a radial drag-to-like interaction.
